By the time the Moores moved to 224 Elizabeth
Street in 1870, Joseph had found new work as a bartender. Enumerated
just below Joseph Moore was Irish-born James Treanor who was also
employed as a bartender. Although Museum researchers may never know
where he served up whiskey and lager, Joseph likely stood behind
the bar at a nearby Irish saloon. A bartender played a much larger
role in the immigrant community than just pouring draughts of beer-the
saloon was the place where issues of the day were debated, where
political candidates campaigned, and where people accessed local
