| Irish immigrants in 19th century New York looked to the Catholic Church to consecrate life’s passing. On April 22, 1869, Joseph Moore paid $10 for the vertical plot at Calvary Cemetery in Queens that would become the final resting place for most of his family. Purchased by the trustees of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1848, the majority of early burials at Cavalry Cemetery were of Lower Manhattan’s poor Irish Catholic immigrants. According to his death certificate (pictured), after Joseph passed away on November 14, 1916, he too was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. Next |
