
| During the 19th century, the majority of Irish immigrants to America were Catholic. Upon arrival, men and women like Joseph and Bridget Moore found a Catholic Church based in the neighborhood parish. But religion extended beyond the walls of the parish and into the home, where 19th century reformers and journalists noted the frequent presence of religious objects in the tenement apartments of Lower Manhattan’s Irish immigrants. When Joseph, Bridget and their daughters Mary, Jane, and Agnes moved to 97 Orchard Street in early 1869, they may have brought with them a crucifix like the one pictured above. Next |
