Advertisements touting unbelievable powers to cure may have led the Moores to use one of the many patent medicines marketed in the local press. Chief among these medicines was Radway’s Ready Remedy, a painkiller widely used to treat chronic diseases such as syphilis, scrofula, and tuberculosis. Some had a high alcohol or narcotic content. In fact, some of these patent medicines did more harm than good to their patients. Nevertheless, these alcohol-and-narcotic filled remedies would have effectively quieted Agnes and put her to sleep.
