Guss' Pickles is now one of the last purveyors
of pickles on Manhattan's Lower East Side. However, at the height
of their popularity, there were countless pickle vendors in the area.
Pickle selling was often a first business for immigrants: cheap rental
of pushcarts and the large market for pickles meant that anyone willing
to work long hours could not only earn a profit, but eventually buy
their own cart or even open a shop.
