As part of our acclaimed Tenement Talk series, join us for a free panel discussion on the challenges LGBTQ refugees face in their search to find a home.
Finding a safe place to call home is essential for new arrivals, and perhaps even more so for LGBTQ refugees who are fleeing their home countries because of violence and religious persecution, but also due to the fact that being LGBTQ is still a crime in many countries. Edafe Okporo, an activist, refugee, and director of a homeless shelter, is joined by others to talk about the challenges LGBTQ refugees face in finding a safe place to live, as well as a welcoming community, once they have arrived in New York City.
Following the panel discussion, attendees are invited to view a NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt display and browse a specially curated selection of books and merchandise in honor of World Pride in our Museum Visitor Center and Shop.
