Walking past 181 Orchard Street, one might never know that Peter Marco of Marcoart has roots that run deep on the Lower East Side. Marco’s great grandfather owned a store in the area years ago called “Okay Kneepants.” In 1995 Peter felt it was only right to return to the neighborhood and continue the family tradition of pioneering on the Lower East Side.
When you step into Marcoart you marvel at the playful and immaculate nature of the space and its owner. Peter himself is a polished and fashion-conscious artist heavily inspired by New York. Each character depicted in his work has an in-depth history and story behind its existence and that makes them come to life for art enthusiasts and the general public. One such example seen in several paintings is the ever popular Miranda the Mermaid who is the concubine of the Ollie the Octopus; luckily this king and queen met on earth and now reside in another galaxy.
Peter feels his work is best viewed together as a group so one can really think and examine its effect. Whether it conveys whimsicality and euphoria, warmth and safety, or just good thoughts Peter feels these concepts are all important in New York to counteract existing stimuli of the city. Common themes Marco hopes to exude through his works are interesting, colorful, and happy. In keeping with the aesthetic of Pop Art everyone can walk out with their own piece of Marcoart, with prices ranging from $30 to $1,000. If that is not up your alley, Marco also sells and produces cups, key chains, and tee shirts.
If you head over to Marcoart and don’t see art that moves you remember Marco can be commissioned to work on portraits in his Pop Art style. Although Marcoart is open regularly from 10 AM – 6 PM its always a good idea to call first and make an appointment.
