In 1903, Joseph Fishkin, with his four children and wife in tow, arrived from Minsk, Russia, and began to look for work in the New York garment industry. After three years of working in various shops, he was able to save up and open up his own store - Fishkin Knitwear on Rivington and Essex Street. Almost 100 years later, his store still thrives, and is still one of the best deals on the Lower East Side.
Son Herman ran it for years, but today the man behind the counter is grandson Mordecai "Buddy" Fishkin. (And sometimes great grandsons Eric and Gary.) Relocated to Grand and Allen Street well over 30 years ago, Fishkin's is a veritable haven for women who like to dress well and are on a budget. Carrying exclusive brands like Sarah Arizona, Jacq Levine, and Andre Assous, and a wide assortment of cashmere (its their speciality), this is a great alternative to expensive, big brand department stores. Says Buddy, "Go look for what you want at Saks - then come here and get it at 1/3 of the price." We agree.
Fishkin also carries Belford Knits, Zanella, Forte, and Eileen Fisher...and in almost any size you're looking for - be it a 2 or a 3X!
