The restored stoop of 97 Orchard Street
In 1905, the landlords of 97 Orchard Street gave their front stoop a facelift. The "new" stoop was likely a practical decision, designed to better expose and foster the building's storefront businesses. In 2001, nearly a hundred years after that overhaul, the Tenement Museum has restored the stoop and storefronts of 97 Orchard Street to its conditions circa 1905. In this slideshow, we take a closer look at both the restoration process and the role of stoops in the day-to-day lives of tenement dwellers.
