The Bronx is now home to a diverse group of people representing countries
from all over the Americas. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Columbians,
Guatemalans and Venezuelans are some of the larger groups that now make
the Bronx there home.
According to the 200 Census, the Latino population of New York City soared
to its highest level ever, surpassing two million in the Census 2000.
This extraordinary increase in the number of Latinos was accompanied by
an increase in the diversity of the Latino population.
Nearly 50% of the Bronx population is Latino and they are a major force
in all areas New York City life. Borough President Alfonso Carrion describes
the Bronx "as 61 neighborhoods that exemplify the best of New York
and the world."
