The Education Assistant reports to the Education Coordinator and is primarily charged with delivering all tours that the Museum offers, including costumed interpretation, at least three days per week. S/he is also responsible for the ongoing management and delivery of the Confino Living History and Tenement Inspectors programs. This position will work a Sunday through Thursday work week and is responsible for the following:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working with senior development staff to set, monitor, and meet institutional fundraising goals for annual and capital campaigns;
  • Conduct educational programs for learners of all ages, both on-site and off-site
  • Assist with the orientation, training, and evaluation of costumed interpreters
  • Assist with the training and evaluation of educators for Confino and Tenement Inspectors programs
  • Schedule costumed interpreters to conduct weekday and weekend education programs
  • Coordinate the Visit from Victoria program
  • Manage Confino-based distance learning broadcasts
  • Serve as liaison for costumed interpreters and implement interpreter training meetings
  • Conduct ongoing research to enrich Confino and Tenement Inspectors interpretation
  • Revise and update Confino and Tenement Inspectors training manuals
  • Manage and maintain Confino and Tenement Inspectors program materials, costumes, and handling objects

Other responsibilities related to the mission of the Tenement Museum: Additional Departmental Responsibilities:
  • Serve as tour coordinator when necessary
  • Assist with orientation, training, and evaluation of new per diem educators
  • Assist in program development as needed

Qualifications
Candidates should have effective communication skills and feel comfortable speaking in front of groups. S/he should be articulate, enthusiastic and engaging. S/he should demonstrate a willingness to conduct tours that invite visitors to critically engage with the issues and themes addressed on the tours. Candidates should be interested in the history of immigration, as well as contemporary issues related to immigration. Applicants with at least a high school diploma or GED or relevant experience are preferred. Experience in educating learners of multiple ages and an ability to retain information quickly and effectively also preferred.

This position will work a Tuesday through Saturday work week and is responsible for the following:

The Grant Coordinator will work with the Grant Associate and the Coordinator of Institutional Giving to meet annual and capital income goals from corporate, foundation, and government sources. The Grant Coordinator’s areas of responsibility will include: developing boilerplate fundraising materials and budgets; working with program staff to complete proposals and reports to institutional funders; monitoring progress toward annual and capital campaign goals; outreach and liaising with current and potential supporters; and researching and identifying new institutional prospects.

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, one of the City’s fastest-growing and most innovative history museums, seeks an energetic, hard-working individual with superior organizational, writing, and communication skills to join a highly motivated and focused development team, as the Grant Coordinator.   • Identifying and cultivating new annual and capital prospects, with a focus on expanding the Museum’s corporate donor base;
  • Overseeing institutional fundraising systems including annual and capital projections and income reports and tracking progress toward institutional fundraising goals;
  • Working with development team members to refine and identify new record-keeping and communications systems that build the effectiveness of the Museum’s institutional fundraising efforts;
  • Developing outreach and cultivation strategies and participating in events related to the Museum’s fundraising efforts; and
  • Working with the Grant Associate to complete day–to–day duties including: database and calendar management; prospect research;, report and proposal writing; and filing.

Other responsibilities related to the mission of the Tenement Museum:
  • Give weekly public tours of the Museum’s National Historic Landmark building; and
  • Respond to requests from program staff and general public regarding information about the Museum’s programs and fundraising practices.

The Weekend Per-Diem Educator is supervised by the Education Coordinator and is responsible for delivering all tours that the Museum offers, attending all educator training meetings, and adhering to all Museum policies and procedures. The weekend Per-Diem Educator will be expected to give tours on Saturdays and/or Sundays at least three weekends per month with the possibility of also working on certain weekdays.

Qualifications
Candidates should have effective communication skills and feel comfortable speaking in front of groups. They should be articulate, enthusiastic and engaging. They should demonstrate a willingness to conduct tours that invite visitors to critically engage with the issues and themes addressed on the tours. Candidates should be interested in the history of immigration, as well as contemporary issues related to immigration. Applicants with at least a high school diploma or GED or relevant experience are preferred. Experience in educating learners of multiple ages and an ability to retain information quickly and effectively also preferred.

Responsibilities
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is seeking a volunteer to conduct introductions for the Confino living history program for visitors on Saturdays and/or Sundays.

The weekend volunteer will introduce Museum visitors to life in a Lower East Side tenement, the Sephardic community, and the challenges of adjusting to a new culture. The weekend volunteer will prepare visitors to take on the role of a newly arrived immigrant family in the year 1916 and to visit the recreated tenement apartment of Victoria Confino, a former resident of the historic landmark building.

Description of Confino Program
The Confino program is set in the year 1916, when Victoria Confino had been living in the United States for three years. She was a Sephardic Jew from Kastoria, in the former Ottoman Empire, whose native language was Ladino. The Museum visitors participating in the Confino Family program take on the role of a newly arrived immigrant family in the year 1916, and Victoria shares her knowledge and experiences with them.

Qualifications
Candidates should:
  • Have strong communication skills.
  • Feel comfortable speaking in front of groups and generating visitor participation.
  • Be articulate, enthusiastic, and engaging.
  • Demonstrate a desire and willingness to conduct programs that engage visitors of diverse backgrounds in exploring challenging issues.
  • Be interested in the history of immigration and contemporary immigration-related issues.

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Have some teaching experience, ideally in a museum, K-12 classroom, or ESOL program.
  • Are bilingual in English and Spanish or Mandarin.
This person must be available to volunteer at least three weekend days per month. S/he must also attend educator training meetings during the evening on the third Thursday of every month.
