The Moores,
an Irish immigrant family, lived at 97 Orchard Street in 1869. Scheduled
to open in early 2008, the Tenement Museum is currently recreating
the Moores' home on the fourth floor of 97 Orchard Street.
At the Tenement Museum, educators use objects to
tell stories. Each object provides a window into the experiences
of the Moores as 19th century Irish immigrants in New York.
The objects pictured in this feature were neither
found in 97 Orchard Street nor owned by the Moore family, but were
acquired by the Museum to tell their story. Some of the objects
are staged in a "mock-up" of the family's apartment, an
unrestored, ruin apartment at 97 Orchard Street used by Museum staff
to test the exhibit with various audiences.
Over time, new objects will be revealed to
expose additional pieces of the family's story. Explore what life
was like for the Moores by clicking on the six objects to the right.
