Long after they made the journey to New York,
Irish immigrants like Joseph and Bridget Moore sustained ties to
family back home through frequent correspondence by letter. After
long hours spent at hard labor, Joseph and Bridget may have sat
down at a desk like the one pictured, where they wrote letters to
family and friends left behind in Ireland. Much more than pure correspondence,
letters home were frequently accompanied by remittances, money sent
to help support those left behind or pay for their passage to America.
