Throughout the 19th century, the primary source
of work for Irish immigrants in New York lay in the least skilled,
lowest-paying jobs. Although nearly half of all male Irish immigrants
worked as laborers, Joseph Moore was among the significant portion
that worked in the service industry. Earning money sometimes as
a waiter and sometimes as a bartender, Joseph's work in saloons,
restaurants, and hotels may have allowed him to bring home beer
in a stoneware bottle such as the one pictured above. Next
