At the turn of the twentieth century, Jewish
immigrant workers served Jewish immigrant customers at the Garden
Cafeteria on East Broadway in the Lower East Side. Today, the same
location houses the Wing Shoon Seafood Restaurant (pictured), a
Chinese eatery largely serving the local Asian immigrant community.
Restaurant work continues to provide a first job for many immigrants
in New York. According to the 2000 federal Census, almost two-thirds
of New York City restaurant workers were born outside of the United
