Stephen Decatur House Museum, Washington, DC

The time-capsule quality of the spaces in this museum are the most compelling expressions of an historical epoch I've seen in my 31-year career as a historic site director. ESDC's plan to annex 99 Orchard Street will clearly enhance the museum's capacity to achieve its nationally, indeed internationally, significant mission to tell the story of a major social and economic force that shaped the course of American history. The Museum is a quality organization that produces outstanding programs; the addition of this adjacent building will allow access by a larger, more diverse audience as well as provide the classroom space so critical to a museum operation. Needless to say, when such a major attraction expands its facility and draws more visitors, the economic benefits to the neighborhood and borough are considerable.
