Theodore Jacobsen
Secretary of the Council, New York City AFL-CIO Central Labor Council

There is no other area of the country with which the history of labor is so entwined as the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was here that scores of German immigrants agitated for the eight-hour day and the forty hour week. It was here that the ILGWU found its leaders and its rank and file. ...The Lower East Side Tenement Museum plays a critical role in interpreting the history of American labor. The New York City Central Labor Council has been a proud supporter for many years. We have watched the Museum's continued growth and development. We have watched it take its position as a leader in the City's cultural community.
