It is difficult to relate the experience of touring the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in words, as it is as much an emotional as an historical one. As the granddaughter of immigrant grandparents, it is with great admiration that I reflect on their decision to come to America and start a new life.
Through touring the apartments in the museum it is unimaginable that families were able to survive and thrive under such extreme conditions; but there also exists stories of great kindness and strength of community. It is truly humbling to walk through these spaces and hear these stories. They are a true example of the American spirit and its origin in our immigrant past. Please allow this exceptional institution to continue to expand its mission, which is now more important as a lesson on our future than as a document of our past.
