Uncovering Family Histories: 10 Essential Steps

6:30 pm to 8 pm

First, tour the museum to explore how the family stories at 97 Orchard have been researched, unearthed, and pieced together. Then, learn 10 essential steps to discover your family’s story from an New York Genealogical and Biographical Society expert. This experience is deal for those who are just starting their own research.

Uncovering Family Histories: Next Level Research

6:30 pm to 8 pm

Guided by an New York Genealogical and Biographical Society expert genealogist, first explore intermediate and advanced techniques for tracing your family history. Then, tour the museum to explore how the family stories at 97 Orchard have been researched, unearthed, and pieced together. This experience is ideal for those who have been researching their family history for more than three years.

Tour & Discussion: Irish Outsiders

6 pm to 8 pm

This program explores the Moores, an Irish immigrant family in post-Civil War New York navigating extreme prejudice and exclusion, alongside massive public displays of pride and inclusion. This is an extended tour which allows time for you to engage in a dialogue that will explore how the Moores' changing status complicated their pursuit of the American Dream. We'll bring the conversation forward to the present to explore additional stories of migration and immigration, and how these same questions impact families today.

Tasting at the Tenement

6:30 pm to 8 pm

Taste a variety of foods from the neighborhood while exploring the influence of immigrant culture on what all Americans eat. Your group starts with a visit to 97 Orchard Street and continues with a sit-down tasting meal in our private dining room overlooking Delancey Street. As the group tastes the flavors of the Lower East Side past and present, they share stories about their most memorable culinary experiences and watch interviews of local store owners who sold us the foods we'll be eating.

Exploring 97

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Go behind the scenes at the Tenement Museum and explore the layers of history in the tenement’s physical fabric. Learn how legislation and fashion spurred landlords and tenants to leave their mark on the building, and how paint experts, wallpaper conservators and urban archeologists "read" these layers to uncover 97 Orchard's stories.
