Join us this Christmas season for a guided tour & tasting! Visit three of the Tenement Museum’s recreated tenement apartments, specially decorated for the holidays, to explore how families would have celebrated and how migration impacted their celebrations. Starting in 1870, the year Christmas became a national American holiday, visit Schneider’s saloon amidst the holiday preparations and public celebrations of German Christmas. Then, visit the Baldizzis in the 1930s and the Saez-Velezes in the 1960s to honor Italian and Puerto Rican Catholic Christmas rituals and how they evolved in New York.

After the tour, culinary historian Sarah Lohman will lead a presentation and tasting of lebkuchen, a traditional German Christmas cookie she adapted from an 1860s cookbook and modern Christmas treats from Lower East Side small businesses!

*Please Note: This program will span multiple floors of our historic tenement building and will involve climbing multiple sets of stairs. For questions regarding accessibility for this event, email us at [email protected].

Can’t make it?

Join us on December 17th for Christmas in Kleindeutschland, a special virtual holiday tour uncovering the surprising history of Christmas in the nation’s first-ever immigrant neighborhood — Little Germany, known today as the Lower East Side.
