An Election Day Professional Learning Workshop
CTLE: 10 Credits
This Election Day, join us for the second installment in our Immigration, Civil Rights, and What it Means to be an American teacher workshop series! On Ellis Island, the day begins with a brief introduction to Ellis Island by National Park Service Rangers. After, a scholar panel will discuss the connections between the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and immigration laws such as the Exclusion and Hart-Cellar Acts.
Next, the NPS Rangers will have participants examine the commemoration of Ellis Island as a historic shrine and symbol of American immigration. The program will examine how Ellis Island reflects our values about what it means to be an American. Moreover, this session will also include a visit to the Board of Special Inquiry, where participants will explore how newcomers navigated these immigrant policies in the evolving federal landscape.
After enjoying a delicious lunch, the participants will learn about three of the Tenement Museum’s families who immigrated through Ellis Island. How did these laws impact them?
Finally, participants will pilot lessons from the Tenement Museum’s newest curriculum, Immigration, Civil Rights, and What it Means to be an American. In groups, participants will go to one of three stations, two stations allow participants to test out a lesson from the curriculum with a Tenement Educator, and the third station enables participants to further explore primary sources from the curriculum and create an activity they can use in the classroom.
We end the day after participants share out their activities.
Note: The group will be meeting at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park, Lower Manhattan. This workshop involves a lot of walking outdoors. Please dress comfortably. Lunch is included and 10 CTLE credits will be awarded at the end of the day. If you have any questions about the workshop or food allergies/dietary needs, email us at [email protected].
This workshop was made possible by the generosity of the National Park Service.
