In the lead-up to Election Day, we’re exploring the importance of studying immigration history and Black history together in order to understand American democracy. Join us on October 21st on YouTube Live for a conversation with Jelani Cobb, Dean of the Columbia University School of Journalism, Mae Ngai, Professor of History at Columbia University, and Tenement Museum President Annie Polland as they examine different moments in American history, showing how immigration restriction is often twinned with voting restriction of African Americans, as in the 1920s, and conversely, how opening the doors to immigration is twinned with expanding voting rights, as in the 1960s.
