JOB DESCRIPTION:
Position Overview
The Tenement Museum is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director, Marketing & Communications to lead the organization's strategic marketing and communications initiatives. Reporting directly to the President, the Director, Marketing & Communications will play a crucial role in driving the museum's brand awareness, audience engagement, and revenue growth. This position currently oversees a team of two employees and collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure the museum's messaging aligns with our mission and goals, with special focus on storytelling, immigrants, migrants, refugees, and history.
This is a critical moment for the Museum and this role. Following a challenging pandemic period, the Museum has re-opened our newly preserved national historic landmark tenement and launched a new exhibit that tells the story of a Black family living in the tenements. This provides a vital opportunity to expand our mission and work to more deeply explore issues of race and identity across our diverse tenement family tours and programs. We have significantly expanded our digital presence and programming, built our base of supporters, and brought on a new integrated marketing and CRM system to help us to better understand and communicate with our constituents. Lastly, we are embarking on a new strategic plan which calls for expanded investment in marketing and development to support future growth and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that brings the museum's compelling historic immigration, migration, and refugee stories to life.
- Lead efforts to enhance the museum's brand identity as a unique destination for exploring immigrant, migrant, and refugee experiences and preserving cultural history.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align marketing strategies with the museum's mission of education, cultural understanding, and historical preservation.
Audience Engagement
- Identify target audiences and develop targeted marketing campaigns that resonate with visitors interested in history, immigration, and cultural heritage.
- Leverage data and analytics to develop, test, and refine marketing strategies, optimize engagement, and measure the effectiveness of campaigns.
Content Development
- Oversee the creation of compelling and emotionally resonant content that capture the centrality of immigrant, migrant, and refugee stories to American society past and present.
- Ensure that all content aligns with the museum's brand guidelines and effectively communicates the museum's mission.
Media and Public Relations:
- Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure coverage and amplify the museum's role as a premier destination for understanding immigration history.
- Develop and execute media strategies that highlight the museum's exhibitions, events, and initiatives within the context of immigration and cultural heritage.
Team Management:
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to a team of two marketing and communications professionals.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture that encourages creativity and professional growth.
- Set clear goals and expectations for team members, and provide ongoing feedback and performance evaluations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with other departments, including Development, Education, and Curatorial, to ensure integrated and consistent messaging across all museum activities.
- Provide input and insights on marketing and communications aspects during cross-functional projects and initiatives.
Budget Management
- Develop and manage the marketing and communications budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to achieve strategic goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, History, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, or related roles, preferably within cultural institutions or history museums.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing and communications strategies, with a focus on storytelling and historical narratives.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing and mentoring a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft narratives that engage and inspire diverse audiences.
- Experience in media relations, public relations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Experience managing consultants, ex. Designer, PR firm, filmmakers, other.
- Proficiency in digital marketing, social media, and content management systems.
- Solid knowledge of SEO, web analytics, CRM software, digital marketing tools and research tools and techniques.
- Strong analytical and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and functions.
- Passion for the mission of the Tenement Museum, a deep appreciation for storytelling, immigration history, and a strong commitment to cultural institutions and historical preservation a plus.

Salary Range
- Salary range is estimated at $115,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience.
