Hard Times: 1880s

Step into the community of Little Germany in the 1880s, one of the earliest immigrant neighborhoods in the United States. On this tour, you’ll visit the tenement apartment of Natalie Gumpertz and her daughters, and the saloon run downstairs by John and Caroline SchneiderWhat challenges did they have to overcome as tenement residents, small business owners, and German immigrants? How did they form community across religious, political and social differences?  

Please note: Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required before taking a building tour for all visitors. Starting December 1st, fully vaccinated children ages 5+ will be permitted on building tours. Children ages 5-11 who are not vaccinated or are unable to be vaccinated can attend a neighborhood walking tour or visit us virtually through our virtual programs and events. Children under 5 cannot attend building tours at this time.

You can host a private tour for a small group at a flat rate of $360 (Monday – Friday between 10 am – 5 pm) and $450 outside of business hours and on weekends and holidays. Members receive a 15% discount. Inquire here.
