Join us for a special focus group about our upcoming exhibit on Joseph and Rachel Moore, African American tenement residents in the 1860s. Joseph Moore moves from New Jersey to Manhattan in 1857, his wife Rachel from Kingston, New York in the same decade. They live in a rear tenement in today’s SoHo neighborhood, in a building with both Irish and African American New Yorkers. In this focus group, you’ll hear about the latest research on Joseph and Rachel Moore, explore why they may have migrated to Manhattan, who their community was, and how they may have experienced this tumultuous moment in US history. Give feedback and share questions to help develop the exhibit and research!
Please note: Masking is required on all indoor tours and in the Visitor Center. Children under 5 cannot attend building tours at this time. Instead, they can attend a neighborhood walking tour or visit us virtually.
