Project Title: An Oral History of 103 Orchard Street
Available: Fall 2008
Project Length: 10 weeks, at least 10 hours a week.
Project Description: The Lower East Side Tenement Museum uses 97 Orchard Street as a lens to examine the history of tenement life and the immigrant experience on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. But because the building’s life as a residence terminates in 1935, the Museum has been unable to extend its interpretation beyond that date. In preparation for future exhibit development, the intern will conduct a series of oral histories with the building’s long-time, Chinese-speaking residents. In order to be considered for this internship, candidates must demonstrate fluency in either Mandarin or Cantonese.
Please send a letter of interest and resume or C.V. to David Favaloro, Research Manager, Lower East Side Tenement Museum, 91 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002 or dfavaloro(at)tenement.org.
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is seeking an intern for its Public Affairs Department during the fall semester. Learn what it’s like to manage press, community relations and marketing at New York’s most visited historic site.
We’re looking for a bright, outgoing individual to assist with a variety of media-related and marketing tasks. This internship will last mid-September to early December, about 10 hours per week, with the possibility of more.
Projects include:
Our ideal candidate has excellent, punchy writing skills; an upbeat and outgoing personality; great organizational and analytical abilities; an interest in marketing/public relations or in a career at a museum or non-profit arts organization; and a flexible schedule (willingness to work occasional evening or weekend events is a plus).
While this internship opportunity is unpaid, volunteers receive great benefits, including free admission to any of the museum’s tours, a discount in the museum shop, and the chance to attend departmental and all-staff meetings. Plus, you’ll get to spend time on the Lower East Side, the coolest neighborhood in New York!
Please contact Public Relations Manager Kate Stober at kstober@tenement.org with cover letter, resume, and a brief writing sample (something you think shows your PR writing skills). Write Public Affairs Intern in the subject line. No phone calls please. Note that this internship will not explore curatorial, archival, or education/programming aspects of museum work.
