JOB DESCRIPTION:

Work Schedule: Thursday through Monday (40 hours per week)

Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000

This is a non-union, exempt position

Job Summary:

The Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side is a cultural institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of immigrant and migrant experiences in the United States. Housed in a historic tenement building, we provide visitors with a unique and immersive glimpse into the lives of the diverse communities who called the Lower East Side home in the 19th and 20th centuries. We are committed to educational outreach, fostering understanding, and preserving the rich tapestry of American immigration history.  

The museum is seeking a dedicated Facilities Supervisor to oversee and coordinate the daily maintenance and repair activities for the Visitor Center, our historic tenement building, office space, and tenant apartments. The Facilities Supervisor will report directly to the Director, Facilities, and play a vital role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the museum's facilities. This is a full-time position requiring availability on Thursdays through Mondays.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Facilities Management:

  • Supervise a team of facilities staff and coordinate day-to-day in-house repairs and maintenance for the Visitor Center, our historic tenement building, office space, and tenant apartments (12) .
  • Assist with cleaning tasks, including mopping, vacuuming, and maintaining office and visitor center bathrooms as needed.
  • Oversee garbage/recycling collection and disposal on a weekly basis.
  • During winter, assist with snow shoveling and snow blowing as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inspections of essential equipment, including HVAC systems, elevators, fire safety equipment, sprinklers, and boilers, as needed.
  • Assist in the procurement and maintenance of office equipment and furniture.
  • Handle miscellaneous tasks and projects as assigned by the Facilities Director.
  • Act as the point person for security and the Facilities team on Sundays and some holidays.
  • Participate in Visitor Center closing procedures by escorting staff to the safe after closing.
  • Conduct hourly walkthroughs on the Visitor Center floor and regularly check in with staff to ensure the safety of both staff and visitors.

Tenant Apartments:

  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of all tenant apartments (12 in total), addressing day-to-day issues such as leaks, pests, painting, lighting, etc., under the guidance of the Facilities Manager.
  • Collaborate with the Building Super to ensure timely resolution of tenant issues.

 
 Evening and Development Events:

  • Set up and break down Evening and Development events as needed, which includes moving furniture, clearing the Visitor Center floor, and removing garbage after the event concludes.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of building systems, maintenance best practices, and safety regulations.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Bilingual is a plus (Spanish or Chinese preferred).
  • Ability to lift heavy items and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Hands-on personality with a positive attitude and a willingness to be flexible.
  • Proficiency in email and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • F95 License Holder preferred but not required.
  • Security Guard certificate is preferred but not required.
  • A smartphone is required; the Museum will reimburse a monthly stipend.
