A bathtub in the kitchen? Inside the historic NY apartments new immigrants called home

Bathtubs and even showers can be found in the kitchens of many of New York’s late 19th and early 20th-century tenement apartments. The flats were often the home of new immigrants and New Yorkers living in these historic homes would bathe next to the kitchen sink – and some still do today.

David Favaloro, our Senior Director of Curatorial Affairs, explains the history behind the presence of bathroom fixtures in kitchens and the practical workarounds residents, like the Baldizzi family, employed to make the most of their unusual layouts.
