Workshops

The Tenement Museum is a great place to learn. Our workshops, offered at various times throughout the year, explore family history research, storytelling, food, photography and more. Topics include:

Uncovering Family History: Getting Started

In this family history workshop, learn the basics of documentary research to help you paint a fuller picture of your family history. First, tour the museum to explore how the family stories at 97 Orchard have been unearthed and pieced together. Then, participate in a hands-on workshop with a New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) genealogist to assist you in discovering your own family’s history. This workshop is for those who are just starting out with genealogical research. This program is a partnership of the Tenement Museum and the NYG&B.

Uncovering Family History: Advanced

Dig deeper into your own family’s history with help from a New York Genealogical and Biographical Society genealogist. Tour the Tenement Museum to learn about how some particularly puzzling mysteries were solved and discover some less common sources and places to find historical information.  This workshop is for those with advanced genealogical research experience.

Your Story, Our Story

Take a special object and learn how to use it to tell a story of your family’s pathways to and through American history and identity. In the Your Story, Our Story workshop, you’ll select and document a special object using art, photography, oral history, and writing; experiment with ways of telling a compelling family story; and create a piece to share in our online exhibit, Your Story, Our Story. Workshop can be adapted to celebrations, family reunions, corporate and community groups.
