Event Location: Virtual

Cost: Free/Suggested Donation

Be a part of our biggest fundraising event of the year by registering for our free/donation-optional live-streamed gala program on May 2nd!

Revisit the Museum at its founding in 1988, explore its evolution in the years since, and learn more about what’s to come in 2023 in a free virtual live broadcast from City Winery in New York City. This 45-minute program features exclusive shorts, a live conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and more!

Hear from Museum Co-Founder Anita Jacobson live onstage accepting the Founder’s Award and view video footage featuring Anita on a visit to 97 Orchard Street with her family, reminiscing about the Museum’s inception and creation and get a look at rare footage of our historic building as it was first discovered in 1988.

As we highlight key moments in the Museum’s history, historian and scholar Leslie Harris will share a portion of a letter from 1989 asking the Museum to honor and remember the Black New Yorkers who made the Lower East Side their home, past and present — an inspiration for a soon-to-be-unveiled permanent apartment exhibit.

Watch a video segment of our Museum Educators in Washington D.C visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and sitting down with Gala honoree Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

Then, join Secretary Bunch and Tenement Museum Trustee Dr. Christina Greer for a live conversation from the stage at City Winery in NYC about the cultural importance of our upcoming 1860s Joseph and Rachel Moore story and the connection between the new exhibit and Bunch’s work as the Founding Director of the NMAAHC.

Honoring Secretary Bunch, our Co-Founder Anita Jacobson, and the Tenement Museum trustees who led the committee on 97 Orchard Street’s preservation, Rebuilding Our Foundations will explore the very beginnings of the Tenement Museum, the people who continue to help us evolve and grow, and the historic building at the center of it all.
