Join us on YouTube Live for a live-streamed Tenement Talk with historian Daniel Soyer, author of Left in the Center: The Liberal Party of New York and the Rise and Fall of American Social Democracy, in conversation with former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger and Tenement Museum President Dr. Annie Polland – streamed from inside our recreated German beer saloon in 97 Orchard Street!

New York has a long history of small political parties that offer voters options beyond a two-party system. But what shapes those parties’ success in electing candidates? In Left in the Center, Soyer traces the dramatic story of the Liberal Party, active from 1944 to 2002. The party helped elect politicians at all levels of government, and provided a political voice for labor activists, independent liberals, and social democrats. In this event, Messinger will join Soyer for a conversation about the history of this party, its successes and pitfalls, and its resonance for politics today.
