Cultural Crossroads

Visit the homes of the Saez Velez and Wong families in the 1960s and 1970s. Hear the stories of two families that came to New York, seeking new lives and opportunities. Two mothers who took charge, advocating for themselves and their children in this new city and building up a community to support other families like theirs. One family of Puerto Rican migrants, another of Chinese immigrants, navigating their way through the many challenges that come with learning a new language and adjusting to a new way of life – working to better their prospects and their neighborhood. How did their differing backgrounds impact their experiences? How did they create an identity of their own? Through oral histories and videos, visitors will hear directly from family and community members to learn about their stories and explore these themes as they tour their recreated homes.

Please note: Unvaccinated visitors, including children under the age of 12, are not allowed on tours inside the historic buildings, and should schedule a visit to the museum by taking Meet Victoria at Play: 1916, an outdoor walking tour, or virtual tour.
