Neighborhood Walking Tours

Day in the Life: 1911

Tenement residents often spent much of their day outside of their apartments. On this tour, you’ll walk the same streets as the Rogarshevsky family did in 1911, to the site of the neighborhood’s pushcart market, to the very first park in the neighborhood, and to an important center of Jewish American life at the Educational Alliance, before visiting their recreated tenement apartment exhibit. Explore the neighborhood through their eyes as they balanced tradition, work, and fun on the Lower East Side. Recommended for visitors of all ages.

As part of the 97 Orchard Street preservation project, this exhibit had been temporarily moved to the Educational Alliance’s Manny Cantor Center, a historic social services organization formed in 1889. Explore the connection between this long-serving community center and our 1910s tenement family, the Rogarshevskys.
