Garment Factory

Share

When: Wednesday, April 21, 2021, 6:30 - 7:30 pm ET

Event Location: Zoom

Cost: Free with Museum membership

The past two months, our member events have introduced you the Epsteins and the Saez Velezes, two of the families who represent the museum’s continued expansion of stories of migration and tenement life in the 20th century on our Under One Roof building tour. Since 2017, we’ve been focused on telling stories of a broader range of people who have shaped American identity, and we’re excited to continue sharing these stories with you.

Our next member event will explore stories of the Wongs, a Chinese American family who lived in 103 Orchard Street. They moved to the Lower East Side in the late 1960s, and we’ll look at how they made a home in the neighborhood and how their experiences reflect the growth of Chinese communities in New York and in the country. Why was Mrs. Wong’s work in the garment industry so important for the family? What was the impact of immigration law on the Wongs’ experiences? Through 360-degree immersive images, through memories and stories directly from the Wongs, and through videos from scholars and historians throughout the tour, you’ll explore the past and connect to the present.
