Did tenement residents have Christmas trees? How did immigrants’ traditions shape the holiday in New York? This virtual tour takes you to the Lower East Side of the 1860s and 1960s for a look at German, Irish, and Puerto Rican Christmas traditions. We’ll discuss the Schneider’s holiday as saloon owners and hosts, the Moores’ rituals and community, and the Saez Velezes treats and festivities as we explore how holiday traditions evolve in a new place.
