Special Virtual Tour: Meet the Schneiders

Celebrate the past and present of small immigrant-owned businesses on the Lower East Side! Journey back in time to 1874 to visit Schneider’s Saloon in the basement of 97 Orchard Street, located in the heart of the Lower East Side when it was “Little Germany.”  You’ll meet an actor playing John Schneider, a Civil War veteran, musician, and saloon owner who will show us his home and business, tell us about his community, and share how he and his wife Caroline are handling the competition and new regulatory laws for saloons.

See how running a business in 1874 was quite different from today, and explore the role community plays in helping newcomers build lives in new places — an experience as relevant today as it was in the 1870s. Throughout the program, participants will have a chance to ask their own questions and interact with John.
