Virtual Holiday Tour: Hanukkah in the Tenements

When: Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 6:30PM - 7:30PM ET
Event Location: Zoom
Cost: Free; Suggested Donation
Did they spin the dreidel in 1910? What does it take to fry a latke in a tenement apartment? For Jewish tenement residents of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Hanukkah was a much smaller holiday than it is today, but one still full of traditional foods and rituals.
Join us on December 12th for a virtual holiday tour exploring how the Rogarshevsky and Confino families might have celebrated the holiday in the 1910s. From the Rogarshevsky’s Eastern European Ashkenazi traditions to the Confino’s Sephardic ones, we’ll explore this moment when Hanukkah grew in popularity and importance in the United States.
Please note: This program will be on Zoom, so registration is required.
This program is supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by Con Edison.
