Watch a free virtual book talk with Sara Jensen Carr, an assistant professor of architecture and the program director for the Master of Design in Sustainable Urban Environments at Northeastern University and author of The Topography of Wellness.

The Topography of Wellness: Health and the American Urban Landscape examines landscape responses to six historical urban epidemics and the implication for current and future practice. Beginning in the Industrial Revolution, Carr narrates and ever-changing relationship to wellness and our environments with the epidemiology of disease. From the infectious diseases of cholera and tuberculosis, the so-called social diseases and the complex origins of today’s chronic illnesses. Each illness and its subsequent remedying have left their indelible mark on our surroundings and these extensive environmental changes often came with significant social and physical consequences – Including inadvertently fostering future epidemics.
