Join us on YouTube Live for a discussion of historian Leslie Harris’ seminal book, In the Shadow of Slavery, which shines light on African American history in New York from Dutch colonization through the Civil War. The conversation will highlight the 1830s-1850s, a critical period in setting the stage for the Tenement Museum’s newest project researching African American couple Joseph and Rachel Moore in the 1860s. How were African Americans, and in particular women, organizing Black institutions and communities after emancipation? In what ways was the city a welcoming or unwelcoming space for African Americans during this time? How did New York’s Black communities fight for national abolition of slavery?  Harris will be joined in conversation by Lauren O’Brien, Lead Tenement Museum Researcher for our Reclaiming Black Spaces initiative.
